JACKSON GRIFFON (10/23/2020)
As the Texas Tech Red Raiders get ready to face off against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the unofficially proclaimed “John Denver Bowl”, there could be more at stake for head coach Matt Wells than who will be crowned homecoming king and queen. We have reached a critical point in this unconventional 2020 college football season. The all too familiar feelings of disappointment and frustration have found their way into the minds of the Texas Tech faithful, which has resulted in the unfortunate, but warranted, skepticism towards the leader of this program.
As we gaze into the crystal ball, let’s consider the consequences that could arise if Texas Tech were to lose this weekend’s matchup against West Virginia. It would not be a stretch to assume that Tech would probably have a decent shot, realistically, at winning two more games this season against Kansas and potentially Baylor. For argument’s sake, that’s a best case scenario of finishing 3-7 (2-8 if they lose to Baylor) with wins over Kansas, Baylor and HBU. Yes, that’s a possibility. At that point it would be safe to speculate that some fans, probably a large contention, would be calling for Matt Wells to be fired. While I believe he should stay another year and ultimately would be granted that opportunity, the hill he and his staff would have to climb in recovery of the fallout of this season would be of epic proportions. The players have expressed their support for their head coach, but as we saw with Kliff Kingsbury, that will only get you so far.
All that to be said, this weekend is a code red for Matt Wells and could either serve as a turning or tipping point for his status of tenure at Texas Tech. This ins’t a win or pack your bags atmosphere; we’re not quite there yet, but this game could have long-term implications on his relations with the fans. It’s now or never coach; fight or flight, sink or swim… Best way to avoid the heat..Go out and win!
